The Forerunner 201 offers athletes an easy-to-read display, ergonomic wristband, and integrated GPS sensor that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data. It is compact, lightweight, waterproof and packed with features for today's serious competitor.

The Forerunner 201 is easy to use right out of the box and delivers the benefits of GPS technology at an affordable price. Working out with the Forerunner 201 means you're never alone in your personal training, because the unit provides a Virtual Partner. This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

The buil-in GPS sensor provides precise latitude, longitude, and altitude data to plot your exact location as you run. Specific locations can be marked and navigated to using the electronic map. Retrace your steps to a starting point or reverse your normal route for routine variation.

The number of calories burned can be tracked and calculated over the course of a workout. Lap history such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace can be stored for up to two years and performance data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide an accurate record.

The intergrated stopwatch provides auto-lap and auto-pause features, while the lap timer indicates when a certain speed is reached or when you've fallen below a pre-set level - a pace whistle sounds alert when you begin traveling slower or faster than your desired pace and a distance whistle sounds when you reach a specified duration or distance in your workout. Software for transfering data from your Forerunner 201 to your PC for storage and analysis can be dowloaded free of charge from the Gramin web site

===============================

Does exactly what I want and is smaller and lighter than I imagined. Stores up to 5000 laps which is about 2 years for serious runners autolapping each mile and about 3 years for me! Pace can be erratic but minimised with smoothing turned on and only a few seconds lag when you change pace. Usually takes a few seconds to get the pace right if you turn 90 degrees though. Measures a route I know to be exactly(ish) 5km and it measured at 3.11 miles so that's good enough for me. Also measured my 7 mile run at 6.85 miles so I'm a bit gutted now but the unit is correct. You press start, look at your mile pace when it beeps every mile, and press stop when you reach the required distance. Or you look at it every 30 seconds and sigh when you realise that gale force headwind is knocking a whole min/mile off your pace! Apres run, you can look at the map of your route showing markers for each mile and what your pace was. Exactly what every runner wants. However, I used to take my mind off how knackered I was by performing complex maths calculations in my head every rough mile so now I have to think about what's for dinner instead. The software isn't available yet but I've tinkered with the output and it seems to record your stats (speed, altitude, long/lat, datetime, time, distance) every 3-7 seconds which is more than enough. Outputting to Autoroute 2004 showed the route correctly with no wayward points but the route was consistently wrong by about 5-10 metres to the south-east. Not bad considering the unit is not waas/egnos compatible. A definite recommended buy if you can't wait for the GPS market to mature. Fireware upgradable and the price includes Lithium 15 hour battery and pc connectivity. Will do until we get an egnos device (within a year?) or Galileo device come 2008.
