Since it's a passive device, it is not bound by telecom laws. Iridium spent 11 years and $5 billion developing the palm-sized pager that uses 66 well-placed low orbiting satellites to transmit messages to any spot on the globe. The pagers also feature a multilingual display -- it's able to support 20 languages so you can have it in everything from Chinese to Arabic to Russian to English to just about everything you can think of.

Conventional nationwide or international pagers typically cover areas near major metropolitan areas. An Iridium 9501 satellite pager will give you 160 character paging or (text) email reception nearly anywhere on Earth.
The reason Iridium satellite paging is global is that your message goes through the Iridium's network of 66 LEO (low-earth-orbit) satellites. Unlike Iridium phone service, Iridium paging usually works indoors as well.
Pages can be sent by email, a satellite pager web interface, or by calling the pager's phone number (480 U.S. area code). You have a choice of 150 messages max per month or unlimited messages per month.
The Iridium Motorola 9501 satellite pager looks and functions like an ordinary belt-type pager and runs about 30 days on an AA alkaline-type battery.

Your have to choices for Iridium paging service: Stand-Alone or Follow-Me Paging. Iridium offers two kinds of service. "Follow-Me Paging" automatically sets the Message Delivery Area (MDA) to the last area from which you made an Iridium phone call. Stand-Alone Paging allows you to set up to 3 MDAs for your Iridium pager, which are regions in the world in which you would receive a page. You can change the MDAs by phone or through the web without charge. Most messages will be delivered within a few minutes, but actual delivery time depends on the length of the message.

Iridium Global Paging Service

Only Iridium Global Paging Service offers global paging and messaging services. Iridium Global Paging Service uses the Iridium constellation of 66 satellites to enable subscribers to receive numeric and alphanumeric paging virtually anywhere on the planet, from cities to remote areas.

Users select the location where messages should be delivered. Location selection ensures delivery of all messages to the Motorola Satellite Series (TM) 9501 Pager. If a message is missed, subscribers can retrieve and resend missed messages. Wherever you may be, you can always be in touch through a single contact number. Senders transmit messages via Internet or email free of charge.

Follow-me paging

Coupling the pager with an Iridium Satellite phone, Iridium Global Page is the ultimate message delivery system. If a caller can't reach you because your phone is busy or switched off, Iridium Global Page Service automatically prompts the caller to leave a voice mail or numeric message. Your pager notifies you that a message has arrived.

Messages follow you where your Iridium Satellite phone is located. If you are on the move, it is as simple as turning on your phone. The system knows where your pager is when you turn on your Iridium Satellite phone. Senders transmit messages via Internet or e-mail free of charge.
